The Dunn ADU & Garage

T.W. Beck Architects started designs for an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) and garage in 2023 with the Dunn’s. They bought a beautiful piece of property with astounding views of the Estes Valley, and we knew the design would be focused toward the south. The Dunn’s hope is to design a custom home on this same property, but while the design process takes place for a residence, they can stay in their ADU.

The challenges with this project were the site grading. With a steep grade increase, we used the height difference to make a walkout area from the upper level onto the hillside. This ADU is unique for the mountain-home aesthetic the Dunn’s pulled through the design. With moss rock collected on site making up the bottom of the building, the ADU blends into its surroundings. The upper floor is comprised of log railing and corners to encourage the feeling of a mountain cabin. This feeling transfers to the interior as well with false log detailing throughout, including on the ceiling. Lots of glass in the windows and doors captures the view of Longs Peak outside and brings it indoors. The ADU extends towards the views with a south-facing deck.

Construction began in 2024 with Devin Jacobs of Estes Park Alpine Construction building the ADU.  Construction will be completed in 2025.
